Understanding Utilization and Dormancy

Utilization and dormancy are two complementary metrics that describe how an asset's time is spent. Utilization tells you how much of an asset's time was spent actively in transit, while dormancy captures everything else. Together, they always account for 100% of an asset's time, making them a key pair of metrics for understanding fleet productivity.

What Is Utilization?

Utilization is the measure of time an asset spends in transit, expressed as a percentage of total available time.

Formula:

Utilization % = Total Time In Transit ÷ Total Time Available

Utilization can be calculated over two standard reporting windows:

  • 7-day utilization — total in-transit time over the last 7 days, divided by 7 days

  • 30-day utilization — total in-transit time over the last 30 days, divided by 30 days

Example: If an asset was in transit for 21 hours total over a 7-day period, its 7-day utilization would be 21 ÷ (7 × 24) = 12.5%.

What Is Dormancy?

Dormancy is the inverse of utilization. It represents any time an asset is not in transit, including:

  • Time spent parked

  • Time spent dwelling in a geofence

  • Any short stops that occur during an otherwise active trip (for example, a fuel stop — even though the trip resumes afterward, that stopped time still rolls up to dormancy)

Key relationship: Utilization % and dormancy % always sum to 100%. Similarly, for a single asset on a given day, total time utilized plus total time dormant always equals 24 hours.

Utilization Warning Levels

Utilization thresholds are configurable in the Admin Workspace – Usage statuses menu. There are four tiers, each defined by a percentage range. Below are Utilization defaults.

Tier

Description

Low

< 5%

Below Normal

5% - 10%

Normal

10% - 15%

High

> 15%

An asset's utilization percentage over the selected reporting period determines which tier it falls into, and assets are color-coded throughout the user interface according to their assigned tier.
